Eating the seeds of the plant was most probably humankind’s earliest interaction with cannabis.
Hemp seeds are rich in high quality protein, very low in saturated fats and contain all of the essential fatty acids required by human beings. Eating the seeds of the plant was most probably humankind’s earliest interaction with cannabis, as hunter-gatherers copied the many birds and animals which also foraged for the nutritious hemp seeds.
The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum and the Hash Marihuana Cáñamo & Hemp Museum display a selection of modern hempseed-based foods and nutritional supplements. We exhibit nutritional hemp books full of information and recipes; everyone from the casual cannabis cook to the gourmet chef can find healthy new meal ideas. Various recipe books are available for purchase at the Museum Gift Shops.
It is important to note that hemp seeds and the nutritional products extracted from them contain no psychoactive compounds, as these are mainly produced in the flowers of the mature female plant, and never appear in the seeds. Eating these hemp seeds will not get you high. Hemp seeds for food are virtually exclusively produced from industrial hemp plants, as the seeds of their psychoactive cannabis cousins are too highly valued to be eaten! Hemp seeds and hempseed products can be eaten and enjoyed by people of all ages, and the main effect is improved health.
Hempseed produced for human consumption typically contains around 25% protein, 34% carbohydrates and 31% fat (mostly in the form of hempseed oil), as well as high levels of dietary fibre and an assortment of beneficial vitamins and minerals. Hempseed kernels are also a healthy, non-allergenic alternative to nuts, as they can be eaten raw or made into hemp-nut butter.
