Mellow Yellow

In 1972 Amsterdam’s first coffeeshop was opened in a squatted bakery. At Mellow Yellow customers could order a coffee and then buy hashish. The hashish was sold in plastic bags at fixed prices of 10 and 25 guilders. This way the bargaining on the street was over, and the customers could see what they were really buying. Until then, imported hashish was always wrapped in tin foil. As Wernard Bruining, the owner of Mellow Yellow, mentions in an interview: “Often there was no hash wrapped inside the tin foil, but a piece of rubber tire or dog food.”
