This print made by ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa comes from the book Tatoe-gusa oshie hayabiki (Instructive Reference-Index of All Sort of Proverbs, 1843), which shows beautiful women representing proverbs. Next to a waka (short poem) and a description of how hemp is used, in the upper right corner, the proverb reads “hemp in celebration of grey hair”. This wedding vow (until the day one’s hair turns grey) also describes the durability of hemp fibre and how maintaining one’s memory over time is like weaving hemp threads.
