This picture, part of the collection of the Taima -Cannabis Museum in Japan, was taken in 1947 when Emperor Showa visited hemp farms in Tochigi Prefecture to assure them that they and their livelihood would be protected from the Taima Torishimari Ho (Cannabis Control Act), which was passed at the behest of the US-led occupation forces in 1948. Before the cannabis ban there were more than 25,000 hemp farms in Japan. Today only 50 licensed farmers produce hemp and Japan is one of the strictest countries in the world when it comes to cannabis.
