This two-piece outfit, made from hemp, is called a kamishimo. It was the everyday formal wear of the samurai during the Edo period (1603-1867) and would have been worn over a kimono. The sleeveless jacket (kataginu) has exaggerated shoulders, which are strengthened with paper. On the front and back of the jacket appears the family crest, or mon, of the samurai. Each pleat of the trousers (hakama) symbolises one of the seven samurai virtues: courage, benevolence, justice, courtesy, sincerity, loyalty, and honour.
