This atlas entitled Dai-nihon teikoku chisan yoran zu (Atlas of Agricultural Production of the Japanese Empire) was published 1889 by the Geological Research Institute as the first thematic atlas in Japan. The editor was Max Fesca (1846-1917), a German agronomist invited by Emperor Meiji to carry out a comprehensive study of agriculture in Japan. As a foreign advisor from 1882 to 1894, Fesca proposed several improvements on the techniques and productivity of Japanese farming. Chapter sixteen of the atlas is dedicated to the hemp production in Japan’s provinces.
