Human Be-In

In the late 1960s, Stanley Mouse was one of the leading creators of psychedelic posters advertising rock concerts in San Francisco. Together with artist Alton Kelley he created the poster announcing the Human Be-In, the first rock festival ever held. It took place on January 14, 1967 in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, and featured – as the poster claims – “all San Francisco rock groups” such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service, but also the presence of poet Allen Ginsberg and psychologist Timothy Leary. The main image on the poster is a photo of a sadhu, a Hindu holy man who ritualistically consumes large amounts of cannabis. At the bottom it states: “Bring food to share. Bring flowers, beads, costumes, feathers, bells, cymbals, flags.”

Many of the images on the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum website are available for reproduction. Please contact us for more information.
