Henry Ford

In 1933, Ford made a plea for annual plants such as hemp. He said, “Why should we fell forests that have taken centuries to mature and exhaust mines which were ages in the making if we can manufacture the equivalent of the forest and mining products every year from annual crops?” In 1941, Ford put his ideas into practice. He created a prototype car using sustainable resources combined with innovative technology. The car’s bodywork was made from an artificial composite based on hemp fibres, soybeans, straw and sisal. But the American car industry collapsed due to the Second World War, and unfortunately Ford’s dream car never went into mass production. However, nowadays there are BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Bugatti cars that have door panels or dashboards made from hemp fibres.
