One can argue that considerable experience with silk thread inspired Japanese weavers to form extraordinary fine diameter hemp strands into a fabric more functional and less costly than silk.

The yukatabira, a casual version of the kimono, was made of hemp and worn next to the skin as the innermost layer of clothing. During the Heian period (794–1185), members of the aristocracy wore these hemp robes to take a sauna-style bath. The hemp provided protection from the hot steam.
