Vincent Van Joint
Warren Madill’s take on one of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings, Sunflowers (1889). Madill is known as a legal art forger and has painted perfect copies of important artworks for museums and art galleries. This, one of his more playful paintings, dates from 1994 and depicts a vase on a table with sunflowers and cannabis branches. On the vase is written “Vincent Van Joint” and on the table lie rolling papers, fallen cannabis leaves and two rolled joints. The sunflower painting had a special significance for Van Gogh: the flowers communicate friendship and gratitude. And Warren Madill knows that “a friend with weed is a friend indeed”.
