The Hasheesh Eater

The Hasheesh Eater (1857) is an autobiographical book by Fitz Hugh Ludlow (1836-1870). During his college years, Ludlow decided to try every strange drug his friend Anderson sold at his apothecary. So when the cannabis-based remedy Tilden’s Extract came out, Ludlow had to try some. In The Hasheesh Eater he describes his altered states of consciousness while he was using hashish: “For the humble sum of six cents I might purchase an excursion ticket over all the earth; ships and dromedaries, tents and hospices were all contained in a box of Tilden’s Extract.” In the United States, the book created great interest in hashish, leading to the production of hashish candy and the opening of hashish parlours in every major city. The copy on display in our museum in Barcelona is a 1975 reprint with illustrations by Wilfried Sätty.
