Spinach and cannabis
Robert Bénard made this botanical illustration for the book Encyclopédie méthodique (1791). In the upper part the French naturalist depicted a spinach plant and in the lower part of the page a beautiful cannabis plant. The curious fact that these two plants are shown depicted on the same page is due to the particular classification of the plant kingdom, established by Carl Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae (1735). The Swedish botanist classified both spinach and cannabis as dioecious plants. In other words, they both have distinct male and female plants.
